The striking rocket-shaped design of Gagarin Square is inspired by one of the most important and spectacular events of the 20th century. 50 years ago, on 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin was the first man to orbit the Earth on board the Vostok-1 spaceship. After the flight, the cosmonaut immediately became one of the most famous men on the planet. His image and that of his rocket lifting into space have become iconic illustrations of modern innovation, and his name has become synonymous with courage and fortitude.
31 July 2013 the Art Academy café with its Gagarin Square exhibition was closed after being open for one year.
The Art Academy has been relocated from 55 Southwark Street to its new temporary building at 62 Borough High Street.Read more news
